Nicolo Alessi arrived in New York City from Italy in 1905. In 1912 he opened his family's first bakery on Cherry Street in Tampa delivering the freshest Cuban and Italian bread to his customers by horse and wagon. Hard work and an insistence on quality set the standard of quality for baked goods in Tampa. John Alessi, Nicolo's son, continued in the proud family tradition of baking, garnering awards for his cake decorating. The third generation of Alessi's - Josie, Rosie, Nick, Phil, and Francis (Gwen) - continue that tradition at Alessi Bakery on Cypress Street, which opened in the 1960's.
