500 Casseroles and Stews
You must by now, assuming you are a regular reader, know how much I enjoy this 500 series from Apple Press. These chunky little volumes are packed with recipes and photographs. They offer a wealth of information and support for the novice and a raft of ideas for the more experienced home cook. Rebecca Baugniet, the author, has written two others in the 500 series: 500 Pies and Tarts, and 500 Pizzas and Flatbreads, and was food consultant on two more. She is a freelance writer living on Canada's West Coast. She has penned a book which offers both traditional and contemporary dishes and with 500 recipes to document it?s safe to say that nothing much has been overlooked.

Cool Waters
Sounds like the name of a town from an old Western. In truth Cool Waters is a book offering 50 thirst-quenching and non-alcoholic drinks made from fresh or dried ingredients. The water used might even come from your own tap (faucet) so be assured that this won't be an expensive hobby.

We know we should all drink lots more water but it is, to be frank, boring. Give a party and see how many of your guests hover by the sink. Very few will be looking for a glass of water and fewer still doing your washing up. Ordinary water is tasteless, if you are lucky, or tainted if you are not.

Mince!
Am I endangering my street cred by even considering a book about Mince (ground meat)? Will I be asked to hand back my membership card to Foodies United? (Please don't write in if such an organisation exists ...on the other hand, do!). No. I am proud to say that I am an unashamed supporter of mince in all its many and several guises.  The author, Mitzie Wilson, is not alone in her regard for humble mince.  She has contributions from such culinary luminaries as Antony Worral Thompson, Rick Stein and Phil Vickery to name but a few. It's no good pretending that we wouldn't touch mince with a ten-foot spatula. There is a lot of mince sold every day and someone is buying it.  I admit that it's often me.

Taste at the Palisades

Los Angeles-Pacific Palisades

Taste at the Palisades, sister restaurant to Taste on Melrose, now resided just off Sunset Blvd a stones throw from PCH. With its relaxed setting, homey yet sophisticated, the menu offers updated Californian comfort cuisine for eminently moderate prices. The menu, split equally between appetizers and entrees, includes seasonal finds like white truffle mac 'n' cheese, salads and pizzettas. The unusual but simple starter of grilled romaine lettuce topped with warm gorgonzola, bacon and Granny Smith apples is a must-try. Main-course highlights like Kobe beef burger and crispy parmesan chicken paillard atop creamy potato puree. Taste at the Palisades offers everything that people are looking for in a neighborhood restaurant - namely good food and friendly service. Visit Taste
